Academy for Narrative and Critical Inquiry

About Us

Established in 2024 by Dr. Lisa Rosenbaum, the Academy for Narrative and Critical Inquiry is designed to advance writing and critical thinking in medicine. The Academy will aim to equip students, trainees, and clinicians with a skillset that allows them to have a voice in the complex forces shaping healthcare delivery. It strives to create a model for academic medicine that gives those in the trenches the time, space, and skills not just to ask the toughest questions facing medicine, but also begin to answer them.

Finding Your Voice: Trainee Workshop
Every second Monday of the month, September 2025 - May 2026
Audience: Medical Students, Residents, Fellows

Tailored for those at the beginning of their academic careers, this workshop guides trainees through the basics of narrative writing with the aim of giving trainees the skills to elevate their scholarship and reach broader audiences.  Workshop attendees will learn through the development and drafting of their own narrative writing such as op-eds and essays, though multi-media content will also be welcome.  Feedback from peers and Dr. Rosenbaum will focus both on improving the work and on considering potential avenues for publication.

Intro to Medical Narrative Writing
2024-25

Many physicians have stories to tell but are not sure how best to tell them. In this course for physicians and trainees, participants will analyze medical narratives, practice writing their own, and critique each other's work. This workshop was run by Dr. Rosenbaum and Dr. Debra Malina, NEJM's Perspective editor.
